A modest sized garden located in Dorset within a stone’s throw of the beach and harbour. The client wanted a contemporary feel to the garden, with space to entertain friends and family, and that made the most of the daytime sun. Essential was an area to sit and relax, with room for cooking and eating outdoors. The client had a love of grasses and wanted this to be reflected in the planting.
Details:
The conifers on south facing border were removed and area behind cut back and supported with pebble filled gabions. Behind these and in the existing border grasses and perennials were planted, enclosing the area with sound and movement.
The old shed, in a sunny spot behind the garage, was removed and replaced on the opposite side of the garden. Hardwood decking now extends over this sunny area and with the kitchen (built using a variety of upcycled materials) a stylish, versatile space has been created.
The garage wall, painted and fronted with raised bed is planted with perennials and tall grasses, maximising the shadows, and bringing the planting nearer the bungalow. Grey porcelain tiles add a modern feel to the top area, whilst a path of the same tile links with the decking area. The grey wooden pergola adds height over the path and draws the eye through to the decking area. A hardwood decking path replaces the old concrete path and leads around the conservatory to the fire pit area.
Now a contemporary and stylish garden, with soft planting and various seating areas to soak up the sun or entertain friends.
